How many people who visit this site *do* things with their dachshund ie train/compete in rally, obedience, agility, tracking, field, earth or conformation?

Who wants to do one of the above activities but hasn't started yet?

How many people simply wish to enjoy their dogs as companions and require nothing of them Smile ?

First Ihave to say if there have been 54 views of this message, why has NO ONE ANSWERED IT???? <G>

I will start - I do conformation showing in order to prove to myself that I am breeding in a positive manner Surprised All of my dogs are champions of record.

I start their agility training as early as their conformation training - at 8-10 weeks of age. I LOOOOOVE agility. It builds a great bond with your dog and if I NEVER competed with the dog formally I would still train them in it.

I just competed in Rally obedience for the first time a week ago and found it to be great fun. You don't have time to be nervous because you have to read on the course <G> and it is another great bond-building exercise with your dog. This is something else you can start training at early one with your dog at the basic level.

Clicker training begins IN the litter box at my house!! This is a GREAT way to teach your dog to think and to offer up behaviors (think tricks for those people who don't wish to do anything formal with their dogs). There are some great videos and books out there on this AND there are websites to help you on this, too. Just google clicker training.)

I compete in Agility, Field Trials, Earthdog and soon Rally with my dogs.

I love agility because of the team work between dog and handler. I just wish I had discovered it sooner.
Watching the dogs compete in Field Trials and Earthdog is a kick because it is just really fun for me to watch these guys doing what they were bred to do.... even if you have to stand int he rain to do it Laughing
Participating in performance events is also a great way to meet new people who are just as crazy about their dogs as you are!

OK, I'm back again <G> Decker has garnered two titles in Rally since he started less than 8 months ago!! It is GREAT fun and the dogs LOVE it.

I truly recommend it! But first, one must start with regular obedience classes and so....I'm starting that with Harper, my red wire boy who is 4 years old next Saturday. He already has agility titles and his conformation championship...and he does clicker tricks and loves them but ....this will be a challenge for him because he truly is an ADHD child <G>

OK, lots of interest in this from viewers Smile
I started a new venue this year - tracking. I started with Harper, the guy in my avatar, in the hopes to obtain a better working attitude for field trials. I've yet to be able to test that theory and don't know when that will happen as I won't be able to attend any in the near future. However, he LOVES tracking!!!! I started my nearly 3 year old girl, Vegas, at the same time and she, too adores it. When I working with one you can hear the other one in the car screaming to get out <G> It is great fun for them, it is great to see them so excited to do it.

However, this sport is very lonely. A LOT of the work is done solo, it takes a lot of time, and in Texas weather needs to be done early morning or at least when it is the coolest part of the day.

Both kids are in a certification match this weekend and I'm probably the LEAST prepared of all of us. If any of us are going to fail the team(s) it will be me!!!

Crying or Very sad

My 2 are my children, Beau is really good at holding the couch down, and Lily like most all dachshunds loves attention and to lick. Lily does have the energy for some type of competition but I have never really looked into it before.

We love showing our dachshunds. All but two of them are Dual Champions, one is Dual pointed and one is a retired Field Champion. There is no greater bond than the one formed with dogs that are being trained regularly for dog sports. I find that obedience training develops a deeper bond than training for some of the other areas. (I'll also say I don't train in agility so that may also create the same or similar bonding as obedience). Agility is the only area we haven't found or made time to explore. I know there are many happy handlers and dogs that show in agility. I think everyone should at least try some obedience classes or agility classes with their dogs.

We enjoy our breed!
